A Walk To Remember is among my favorite books from Nicholas Sparks. I remember watching the movie first, as a child and breaking down towards the end. ‘It’s not fair’, I said. They deserved a happy ending, that was what my kid brain thought.
Unfortunately, that’s not how the real world works. There are sad moments, full of unfairness and injustice throughout our lives. In these moments, all we can do is to hold the ones we love closer and hang on till the end.
Despite its bittersweet ending, A Walk To Remember is still an amazing teenage love story, filled with the best moments ever. Sparks’ writing is filled with wonders and he can turn even the most cold-hearted human beings into mush, teary men and women by the time you are done with his work.

The book is from the perspective of a 57-year-old Landon Carter. He reflects upon his time as a 17-year-old in Beaufort. Back then, his dad used to be a Congressman.
Due to the nature of his job, his dad was never often around. However, when he is, he pressurizes Landon into various things, like becoming class president. He wins and is required to go to the school dance, along with a date. He finds no one available and asks Jamie out, the minister’s daughter. Although hesitant and unwilling to go along with her, due to her religious beliefs and conservative look, he eventually has a good time and acknowledges that she was the best date he could have asked for.
Jamie then enlists Landon’s help in prepping for the school play. He is asked to play a character, which he isn’t too excited about. They get teased, which makes him feel embarrassed. They learn more about each other, including Jamie’s other philanthropic activities, which Landon is impressed by.
However, things sour between them for a while. But when the play comes on, he is transfixed by how beautiful she looks. They makeup and slowly fall in love with each other.
However, when Landon confesses this to her, he is met with rejection. When he asks why she didn’t love him, she replies that she has leukemia and that she was dying of it. This shatters Landon’s heart and he breaks down profusely.
Jamie leaves school and her father informs the congregation about the bad news. Help and sympathies begin to pour in. Even those who were mean to her in the beginning apologize and turn friends. Meanwhile, Jamie decides to let go as well and confesses her love for Landon.
The book ends with the two of them marrying, fulfilling Jamie’s lifelong dream of being married in a church surrounded by people. It then cuts to Landon in the future who discloses that he is still very much in love with Jamie, wearing his wedding ring to signify their love.
